If you've ever searched for someone to sort out your gutters, you'll have seen the terms "gutter clearing" and "gutter cleaning" used almost interchangeably. They're not the same thing — and knowing the difference matters, because a gutter that's been cleared but not cleaned is still heading for problems.
Here's what each involves, why your gutters need both, and how we approach it at Clearstone.
Gutter clearing: removing the blockage
Gutter clearing is exactly what it sounds like — removing the debris that's blocking the gutter channel. Leaves, moss, twigs, silt and the occasional tennis ball all find their way into gutters, and when they build up they stop water flowing to the downpipe.
Clearing is the essential first step. A blocked gutter overflows in heavy rain, sending water down the wall where it can cause damp, staining and — over time — structural damage. But clearing alone leaves two problems behind:
- Silt and fine debris stick to the bottom of the gutter even after the bulk is removed, holding moisture and encouraging regrowth.
- The downpipe and the gutter exterior (fascias, soffits, the underside of the gutter) are still dirty, stained and often green with algae.
A cleared gutter works. A cleared and cleaned gutter works and lasts.
Gutter cleaning: restoring the whole system
Gutter cleaning goes further. As well as clearing the channel, it includes:
- Flushing through the downpipes to make sure water flows freely all the way to the drain
- Cleaning the exterior of the gutter, fascia and soffit boards, removing the green algae staining that builds up on roofline timber and UPVC
- Inspecting the joints and brackets for signs of wear, leaks or sagging, so small issues are caught before they become expensive ones
The result is a roofline that not only works properly but looks clean and cared for — which matters if you're maintaining a property's appearance as well as protecting it.
How we clear and clean gutters safely
At Clearstone, we use high-reach SkyVac gutter vacuum systems that let us clear gutters from the ground, even on two- and three-storey properties. That means:
- No ladders against your walls or gutters, so no risk of damage to fascias, tiles or pointing
- No one working at height, which is safer for our team and your property
- A camera on the vacuum head, so we can see exactly what's in the gutter and confirm it's clear afterwards
For the exterior clean, we use pure-water fed poles to wash the gutter, fascia and soffit surfaces — leaving them streak-free and restoring the original colour without the need for harsh chemicals.
How often should gutters be cleared?
For most homes, once a year is enough. Properties surrounded by trees, or with moss-heavy roofs, may need clearing twice a year — once in autumn after leaf fall, and once in spring to catch anything that's blown in over winter.
Regular clearing is far cheaper than repairing the damage a blocked gutter causes. A single overflowing gutter can lead to damp patches, blown render, rotten fascia boards and even subsidence from water pooling at the foundation — all of which cost many times more than a yearly clear.
